Large gray dagger caterpillar (Acronicta insita) in tall grass prairie habitat, Manitoba. Henault, biodiversity
Large gray dagger caterpillar (Acronicta insita) in tall grass prairie habitat, Manitoba.

I am analyzing moth diversity in distinct forest regions in Manitoba as a baseline for climate change. Approximately 20 years ago, several MSc students or research assistants (Dr. Richard Westwood) used light traps to collect nocturnal moths in forests in southern and central Manitoba. Forest were managed by commercial or government organisations using varied silvicultural techniques. Although I prefer high-quality pictures to physical specimens, I think these already collected moths can still facilitate timely research! By comparing species from different ecosystems, Dr. Richard Westwood and I can describe species diversity, distribution and possibly habitat specificity in Manitoba. Also, by comparing our checklists to previous and more recent surveys we may be able to identify changed distributions. I am also interested in species increases or declines caused by climate change, which hopefully will generate potential solutions to supporting biodiversity!
